Project Overview
In the high-density suburb of Marrickville, a homeowner with an existing 6.6kW solar array was ready to take the next step toward total energy independence. The goal was to move beyond simple solar generation and enter the world of smart energy storage and grid trading, despite the physical limitations of a duplex property.
What the client needed
- High-Capacity Storage: A significant battery reserve to cover evening usage and peak periods.
- VPP Readiness: A system capable of participating in a Virtual Power Plant to generate income from stored energy.
- Space-Saving Design: A solution that complied with strict Australian installation standards within a narrow duplex footprint.
Our objectives
- Upgrade the Core Infrastructure: Replace the existing standard inverter with a high-performance hybrid model.
- Maximize Footprint Efficiency: Identify and prepare a compliant installation zone that wouldn’t infringe on the limited outdoor living space.
- Enable Self-Sufficiency: Size the battery storage to ensure the home could run almost entirely off-grid during non-daylight hours.
Provided Solutions
We designed a system centered around the Sungrow SH5.0RS Single Phase Hybrid Inverter, a robust unit perfectly suited for residential upgrades. To provide the massive 20kWh of storage requested, we utilized the Sungrow SBH 400 battery modules. These high-voltage batteries offer a stackable, slimline design, crucial for the duplex’s limited space. We also optimized the roof with Risen 440W N-Type panels, ensuring the 6.6kW array generated maximum yield to keep the large battery bank charged.
Final Outcome
The Marrickville residence is now a model of urban self-sufficiency. By integrating the 20kWh Sungrow system, the customer has achieved their goal of becoming a “prosumer.” They are not only powering their home for free at night but have also successfully joined a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). This allows them to trade their excess stored energy back to the grid during peak demand, effectively turning their battery into a revenue stream.
